This article explains how to reset the Zebra ZD420 or ZD421 label printer to factory default settings and reconnect it to your network or device. A reset is useful when troubleshooting connectivity issues, print errors, or configuration problems.
Part 1: Perform a Soft Reset (Reboot)
If the printer is unresponsive or showing an error:
Press and hold the Power button until the printer turns off (about 3 seconds).
Wait 5 seconds.
Press the Power button again to restart.
When the Status Light turns solid green, the printer is ready.
? Tip: This quick reboot can often fix minor connection or print issues without erasing settings.
Part 2: Factory Reset the Printer
To restore all default settings:
Make sure the printer is powered on.
Press and hold the Feed + Pause buttons together for 5–10 seconds.
Release both buttons when all lights flash once simultaneously.
The printer will restart automatically.
Alternatively, if you prefer using the power-up method:
Turn the printer off.
Press and hold the Pause + Cancel buttons.
While holding, press the Power button to turn it on.
Continue holding until the status lights flash, then release.
⚠️ Note: A factory reset will erase all custom network, label, and calibration settings. You’ll need to set these up again
Part 3: Reconnect the Printer
Option 1 – Bluetooth or USB
Plug the printer back into your iPad, Mac, or PC.
Open your POS or printing app (e.g., Shopify POS, Zebra Setup Utilities).
Select the Zebra ZD420 from the available devices list.
Print a test label to confirm connectivity.
Option 2 – Wi-Fi
Press and hold the Feed + Cancel buttons until a network configuration label prints.
On the label, note the printer’s IP address.
Open your browser or the Zebra Setup Utility and connect using the IP address to reconfigure the Wi-Fi settings.
Part 4: Calibrate the Labels
After resetting, always calibrate your printer to ensure labels align correctly:
Press and hold the Feed button until the status light flashes twice, then release.
The printer will feed and measure a few labels to adjust calibration.
Once the Status Light returns to solid green, calibration is complete.
