How to Reset and Connect a Shopify WisePad to an iPad

This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to reset the Shopify WisePad card reader and reconnect it to an iPad running the Shopify POS app. 


Before You Begin

Make sure:

  • Your WisePad is fully charged.

  • Bluetooth is enabled on the iPad.

  • The Shopify POS app is updated to the latest version.

  • The iPad is connected to a stable internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data).



Part 1: Reset the WisePad

  1. Turn on the WisePad by holding the power button until the screen lights up.

  2. Press and hold both the Power button and the Bluetooth button simultaneously for 10 seconds.

  3. The device will display “Resetting” or the screen will flash, indicating the reset is in progress.

  4. When complete, the WisePad will restart and display “Ready for pairing” or the Bluetooth symbol.

? Tip: If the screen doesn’t turn on, connect the WisePad to a charger and wait a few minutes before retrying.


Part 2: Forget the Old Connection on iPad

  1. On the iPad, go to Settings → Bluetooth.

  2. Under My Devices, find your WisePad (e.g., “WisePad 3” or “Shopify Reader”).

  3. Tap the (i) icon next to it and select Forget This Device.

  4. Confirm when prompted.



Part 3: Reconnect the WisePad in Shopify POS

  1. Open the Shopify POS app on the iPad.

  2. Tap ☰ Menu → Settings → Set up hardware → Card readers.

  3. Select Connect card reader.

  4. Choose WisePad 3 (Bluetooth).

  5. When prompted, press and hold the Bluetooth button on the WisePad until it appears in the list.

  6. Tap the reader name to connect.

  7. Once paired, you’ll see “Connected” on both the iPad and WisePad display.



Part 4: Test the Connection

  1. From the POS home screen, open Settings → Hardware.

  2. Confirm the WisePad is listed as Connected.

  3. Optionally, run a test transaction using a $0.01 charge or refund test (depending on your store policy).
